As the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025 unfolds at Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the competition is heating up with every round. With 373 players from 16 federations, the event has now found its full rhythm — showcasing tactical fireworks, resilient defences, and inspiring performances from across the Commonwealth.
Hosted from 8 to 17 November 2025, with a total prize fund of RM95,000 (approximately USD22,900), this prestigious event continues to stand as one of the region’s most significant gatherings of chess excellence.
The championship was inaugurated with a friendly opening game between Mr. Bharat Singh, President of the Commonwealth Chess Association, and Mr. Akhramsyah Muammar, President of the Malaysian Chess Federation. A short and amicable draw was agreed upon after just a few moves — despite not reaching the usual move requirement — a symbolic start to what promises to be an intense and exciting week of competition.
A Prestigious Commonwealth Gathering

This year’s championship features both Standard and Blitz events, attracting an impressive lineup of titled players — 8 Grandmasters, 3 Woman Grandmasters, 8 International Masters, and 1 Woman International Master.
One of the largest contingents hails from South Africa, with 47 players proudly representing their federation. Alongside the Open event, there are 12 age-group categories (U8–U18), making the championship a vibrant blend of elite competition and youth development.

A notable innovation this year is the introduction of NFC-integrated player name cards, which are scanned whenever players leave for the restroom. This smart system enhances fair play and transparency, ensuring tournament integrity. The technology was developed by Liew Jun Juin, with NA Syaiful Asyraf designing the visuals for the name tags and accompanying materials.
